A roadside bomb killed 13 civilians travelling by motorbike Wednesday in southern Afghanistan, the Interior Ministry said.

"A roadside bomb planted by the enemies of Afghanistan struck a motorbike carrying civilians and martyred 13 innocent civilians, including children, women and elders," the ministry said in a statement, DPA reported.

The attack took place in Khoshamand, a district in Paktika province, it said.

The passengers were travelling in a trailer attached to a three-wheeled motorbike, a mode of transport often used in remote areas.

The battle against the Taliban has brought a high civilian death toll. This week, at least 17 civilians were killed by three roadside bombs.

Roadside bombs have often been used by the Taliban to target Afghan and foreign troops. However, civilians have often also become casualties.

The Interior Ministry said there were 6,716 terrorist attacks in 2010, which included 2,309 roadside bombs.
