A foreign soldier and two Afghans were killed Monday after a suicide bomber targeted NATO forces in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar, an official said.

The attack took place in the centre of the provincial capital, also called Kandahar, Zalmai Ayoubi, a spokesman for the provincial governor, said, DPA reported.

A foreign soldier, his interpreter and a civilian were killed and one other civilian was injured in the attack, he said.

A NATO spokesman in Kabul had earlier said the military alliance was aware of an explosion and that they were looking into it.

Quoting security sources at the scene, Tolo, a private broadcaster, said four people had been killed and two others were injured in the blast.

Kandahar is the spiritual home for the Taliban, who were forced from several areas in the province in a NATO offensive last year. Most of the NATO troops stationed in the former Taliban stronghold are from the United States and Canada.
