German defense minister visits troops in N. Afghan province

German Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg paid an unannounced visit to Kunduz province 250 km north of capital Kabul on Thursday and visited troops there, press officer of NATO-led troops in the province Lieutenant Colonel Burchardi said, Xinhua reported.

"Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg paid a visit to Kunduz and visited the troops stationed there," Burchardi told Xinhua without giving more details.

More than 4,400 German troops, with majority of them deployed in Kunduz province, have been serving in Afghanistan within the framework of NATO-led International Assistance Force (ISAF) to help stabilize security in the war-torn country.

Foreign dignitaries often pay unannounced visit to Afghanistan and depart secretly due to security reasons.
