Water in a pool storing spent nuclear fuel at the No. 4 reactor at the Fukushima 1 nuclear power plant may be boiling after the fuel had caught fire earlier, the Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) said Tuesday.
The development is the latest complication at the plant stricken after last Friday's 9.0-magnitude earthquake struck Japan and comes after earlier reports that an explosion had been heard at the number 4 reactor, possibly caused by as hydrogen blast, DPA reported.
A TEPCO official said that the number 4 reactor was not in service at the time the earthquake struck.
