NATO: No decision yet on enforcing Libyan no-fly zone

NATO has not yet taken a decision on whether it will enforce a United Nations-mandated no-fly zone over Libya, its spokeswoman said Wednesday, dpa reported.

"Allies continue to consult today, no decision has been taken," Oana Lungescu told reporters in Brussels.

Since Saturday, the no-fly zone has been enforced by an international 'coalition of the willing' led by France, Britain and the United States.

Lungescu said countries were discussing "in a constructive spirit" about shifting the command of the operation to NATO. An operational plan for that was approved on Tuesday.

The official highlighted that Tuesday's parallel decision to have NATO vessels and submarines police the UN arms embargo on Libya showed that "NATO is united and NATO is taking action."

Asked whether the military assets put in place for that naval mission could also be used for enforcing the no-fly zone, NATO's spokeswoman said, "that remains a hypothetical question."

Diplomats said NATO ambassadors would meet for the sixth consecutive day later on Wednesday to discuss the no-fly zone question.
