The Spanish King's Cup trophy was almost crushed beyond repair in the small hours of Thursday morning, during the wild celebrations of Real Madrid after their surprise 1-0 defeat of favourites Barcelona, DPA reported.

Real flew back from Valencia, the scene of the final, to Madrid straight after the victory. They were parading the trophy from their open bus through the capital's rainy streets at four in the morning, when defender Sergio Ramos accidently dropped the cup.

The trophy was then damaged by the wheels of the slow-moving bus, until the driver was told to stop. It was taken back onto the bus but was not waved again to the fans by the players afterwards.

Ramos said that "the cup fell but it is fine." The Spanish football federation commented on Thursday that the trophy was "slightly damaged" but will be "quickly repaired".

Several videos of the incident were downloaded onto the video- sharing website YouTube by Thursday morning.
