Greenpeace activists block train with nuclear waste

Activists from the environmental lobby group Greenpeace were on Tuesday blocking a train carrying a shipment of nuclear waste in the Netherlands, the Dutch news agency ANP reported.

The shipment from the Borssele nuclear power plant in the southern province of Zeeland was destined for a nuclear reprocessing plant in northern France, DPA reported.

About 10 activists chained themselves to the three trucks being used Greenpeace claims the shipment constitutes the same amount of radioactivity as was released in the recent disaster in Fukushima, Japan.

The nuclear waste shipment, the first in six years from the Borssele plant, is to be taken by rail through Belgium to the plant near the city of La Hague for reprocessing.

The shipment was cleared by the Belgian courts, after Ghent local council tried to blocked it, the Belgian daily Gazet van Antwerpen reported.
