A Japanese woman missing for 13 days was rescued from a cave in Nepal by a group of local women, media reports said Thursday.

Makiko Iwafuchi, 49, had been missing since May 26 from the mountainous Rasuwa district, 120 kilometres north of Kathmandu, DPA reported.

Police said a group of women found her in a cave and she was admitted Wednesday to hospital.

"She told us she ate leaves and bamboo shoots and drank water from rivers during the time she was missing," police officer Surendra Bikram Bartaula told the Republica daily.

The woman suffered insect bites and minor injuries but was in stable condition.

The woman, who had been trekking alone in Rasuwa, told police she had left her hotel for a walk with her camera, poncho and jacket but lost her way in the wilderness.
