Three serial bomb explosions ripped through crowded commercial areas in Mumbai on Wednesday killing at least 17 people and wounding 81, officials said.
The blasts took place during the evening rush hour at the busy Zaveri Bazaar, Opera House and Dadar areas of south and central Mumbai, DPA reported.
Prithviraj Chavan, chief minister of Maharashtra state of which Mumbai is capital, said the police had so far confirmed 17 deaths and 81 people were being treated for injuries in hospitals.
Federal Home Minister P. Chidambaram in a brief statement in the national capital said the incident was being treated as a coordinated attack by terrorists.
A security alert had been sounded across Mumbai and in national capital Delhi.
