The CIS chairmanship for 2012 will be transferred to Turkmenistan, which in early November 2012 will hold summit of the heads of states of the CIS countries in Ashgabat, RIA Novosti quotes the CIS Executive Committee Chairman Sergei Lebedev as saying.
"It was decided that the CIS chairmanship will be transferred to Turkmenistan from Jan.1, 2012," Lebedev said.
The current summit host Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon congratulated his counterparts on the 20th anniversary of the CIS and stressed the organization's important role in "preserving established relations" on the post-Soviet space.
"If we want to further strengthen our multiphase cooperation, it is necessary to use available resources and efforts of the states in realization of the common solid potential," Rahmon said addressing a meeting of the Council of CIS Heads of States in expanded format.
