Protesters break into Ukraine parliament

Protesters broke into Ukraine's parliament on Tuesday, paralysing a legislative session in progress, DPA reported.

Some 700 veterans of the Soviet-Afghan war and the Chernobyl nuclear power accident broke through a police cordon and smashed an entrance door to enter the parliament building.

They had been demonstrating against planned reductions in social welfare payments under consideration by the legislature.

Some of the demonstrators shouted "shame!" at legislators.

Police were pushing reporters away from the building, but by late morning were not attempting to force out the demonstrators.
