Three Pakistani soldiers were killed and five wounded Saturday in an attack by suspected Taliban militants in the troubled north-western region along the Afghanistan border, security officials said, DPA reported.

The attack took place in the Speena Mela area of South Waziristan, one of seven tribal districts where government forces are fighting the Islamist insurgents.

An intelligence official said a military convoy was attacked while on its way from the district's Zongara region to the garrison town of Razmak in North Waziristan.

While no group claimed responsibility for the attack, Taliban have regularly targeted the army in the area.

Pakistan has maintained a heavy military presence in South Waziristan where Taliban and other al-Qaeda-linked groups are active.
