Afghan gov't beefs up security ahead of Loya Jirga

As preparation for convening Loya Jirga or Afghan traditional grand assembly is underway in the Afghan capital city Kabul, the government has beefed up security to check any untoward incidents, Xinhua reported.

The traditional Loya Jirga -- an assembly of tribal elders, chieftains, parliamentarians and government functionaries is going to be held amid tight security within couple of days, possibly Wednesday.

As part of security measures, security checks have been strict and police have been deployed in all sensitive areas especially around the Jirga avenue and hilltops at nearby.

Authorities, as part of efforts to prevent possible Taliban attacks on the Jirga, have instructed the property dealers not to rent any house and accommodation in the localities located around the Jirga avenue, according to local media.

The four-day assembly is held inside a giant tent located in the premise of Kabul Polytechnic Institute, and the government as part of security measures has already sent the students for vocation.

More than 2,000 people would attend the Jirga to discuss the proposed Washington-Kabul strategic partnership amid Taliban threats.

The Taliban outfit which attacked a similar Jirga held under the same tent to discuss the government-initiated national reconciliation and talks with the armed opposition groups in 2010, has already vowed to target and disrupt the coming Loya Jirga.
