Two rockets hit Afghan capital on second day of tribal elders' meet

Two rockets were fired into the Afghan capital early Thursday, injuring one, on the second day of a meeting of tribal elders, officials said, DPA reported.

The Loya Jirga meeting started Wednesday with 2,000 Afghan tribal elders discussing a proposed long-term partnership with the United States, and the possible resumption of attempts to negotiate with the Taliban.

Neither of the rockets landed close to the meeting venue, Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Seddiqi said.

The Taliban have threatened participants of the meeting with violence, saying that the US should be considered an enemy not a partner.

The insurgent group did not respond to requests for comment on Thursday.

Before the rocket attack, authorities arrested two people with eight handguns, three assault rifles and one rocket-propelled grenade late Wednesday, Seddiqi said.

On Monday, security forces killed a suicide bomber who had managed to enter the venue before he could detonate his vest.
