Fourteen NATO members, including Germany, have followed the United States in withdrawing from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE), which mandates information sharing with Russia and sets limits on non-nuclear weapons, NATO diplomats said Wednesday.
The sources did not name other countries, but said that more members of the 28-member military alliance were planning the same move, DPA reported.
"This is a reaction to Russia having suspended the CFE treaty in 2007 and not being willing to return to it," NATO sources said.
The decision, communicated to the Vienna-based Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe on Tuesday, means that the Russian side is no longer given any information about conventional forces in Europe, the diplomats said.
