UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday pledged support for the interim government of Libyan Prime Minister Abdel Rahim al-Keib, DPA reported.

Ban said in a message that the UN assistance mission in Libya will work to bring peace and prosperity to Libya. He urged the UN Security Council to extend the mission's initial mandate, which expires at the end of the year, by three months.

Ban, who visited Libya on November 2, said in a report to the Security Council on Wednesday that Libya would need long-term international support after the war that ended the 42-year rule of slain leader Moamer Gaddafi.

"The Libyan people have created for themselves an extraordinary opportunity, and now face extraordinary challenges," he said.
