Obama, EU leaders meet at White House

US President Barack Obama greeted top European Union officials Monday for a summit in which the eurozone debt crisis was expected to top the agenda, DPA reported.

The leaders sat on opposite sides of a long, rectangular table in the White House's Roosevelt Room. "Welcome, you guys," Obama told the European delegation. "It's wonderful to see you."

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, along with other top EU officials, were to discuss the global economy along with developments in the Middle East and North Africa, the Iranian nuclear programme and counterterrorism efforts, the White House said.

Along with Obama, US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner were in attendance.

The Obama administration has criticized the slow political decision process at the EU, while Europe has balked at Washington's criticism of eurozone financial management at a time when the US is in the midst of its own debt crisis.

White House kitchen staff were seen plating a lunch of chicken with white rice and green beans.
