The UN Security Council on Monday strongly condemned the terrorist attacks in Nigeria, and " underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice", Xinhua reported.

"The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attacks that occurred in Madalla, Jos and Damaturu, Nigeria, on 25 December 2011, causing numerous deaths and injuries," said a statement issued here.

"The members of the Security Council expressed their deep sympathy and condolences to the victims of these heinous crimes and their families, and to the people and government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria," the statement said.

A bomb exploded on Sunday morning at St. Therasa Catholic Church in Madalla town on the outskirts of the West African country's capital Abuja after the Christmas Day Mass, killing at least 25. Hours later, blasts were reported in central Nigerian city of Jos.

"The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of its motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed, and should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization or ethnic group," the statement said.

"The members of the Security Council reaffirmed the need to combat by all means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts," the statement said.

The members of the Security Council reminded states that they must ensure that measures taken to combat terrorism comply with all their obligations under international law, in particular international human rights, refugee and humanitarian law, the statement said.

"The members of the Security Council underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice, and urged all states, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Nigerian authorities in this regard," the statement said.

"The members of the Security Council reiterated their determination to combat all forms of terrorism, in accordance with its responsibilities under the Charter of the United Nations," the statement added.
