German official hopes for political solution on Egypt's NGOs

The head of a German non-governmental organization that is accused of operating illegally in Egypt called Wednesday after talks in Cairo for a "political solution" to the dispute, dpa reported.

Hans-Gert Poettering, head of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, said in an interview by phone with dpa, "We want there to be a satisfactory political solution."

He added, "The Egyptian government now has to offer something." He said all Egyptian officials he met had shown keen interest in his foundation continuing to operate in Egypt. He said it was not in Egypt's interest for the dispute to further escalate.

Poettering rejected charges by Egyptian magistrates Monday against the foundation, one of a range of aid groups caught up in the case. Prosecutors accuse 43 NGO workers, among them 19 United States and two German citizens, of setting up unlicensed offices in Egypt.
