White House: Arming Syrian opposition "not wise" currently

The White House said Friday that arming Syria's opposition would be unwise at this time, despite mounting calls for help from restive parts of the country being subjected to military force by the Damascus regime, dpa reported.

"Further militarization in Syria at this point in time is not a ... policy that we believe is the wise one to pursue at this point," White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters at a briefing.

US presidential candidates Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, and former House speaker Newt Gingrich, earlier in the week voiced support for the idea of arming rebels to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Al-Assad continues to crack down on protesters despite calls from the United Nations and the broader international community for a halt to the violence.
