Three French soldiers who were killed by a serial shooter in the south-west of the country fell victim to "a terrorist execution," President Nicolas Sarkozy said at their military funeral in the town of Montauban on Wednesday, DPA reported.

"A French soldier knows death and how to confront it," he said. "The death they met was not the one they had been prepared for. It was not the death of the battlefields, but a terrorist execution."

Sarkozy also insisted that France would not be split by the attacks on the soldiers or that at a Jewish school a few days later - a message he has been broadcasting throughout Wednesday as news emerged that the incidents likely had religious motives.

The president spoke as a stand-off between the main suspect and police continued in Toulouse, some 50 kilometres away from Montauban.
