Two people were killed and 25 injured when an explosive went off in a car in India-administered Kashmir Thursday, police said.

The blast took place in the town of Bijbehera, 45 kilometres south of the state capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar, dpa reported.

The driver of the car died on the spot, police sources said. It was not clear whether it was a planned blast or if a land mine detonated under the car, police said.

Sixteen of the injured were being treated for serious injuries in hospitals in Srinagar .

No militant group has claimed responsibility for the blast.

More than 45,000 people - including civilians, militants and soldiers - have died in India-administered Kashmir since a violent separatist militancy broke out in the 1980s.

The disputed Muslim-majority Kashmir region is divided into India- and Pakistan-administered areas.
