Fighting in Pakistan's north-western region Saturday left at least four soldiers and a dozen militants dead, a security official said, dpa reported.
Fighting broke out when Pakistani security forces carried out a sting operation in South Waziristan, one of the seven tribal districts along the Afghan border.
"Both sides exchanged fire and as a result our four soldiers were martyred and one was injured while our soldiers killed 12 militants," said a senior military official. "The operation has been concluded now."
Pakistani security forces conducted a major operation in South Waziristan in 2010, forcing the Taliban to flee from what was once their main base for launching attacks, not only into Afghanistan but also in Pakistan.
The Taliban retreat was just temporary and they have started to return to the district and operate mainly from their bases in the mountains.
