Six people were killed Monday in a shooting at a private religious college in northern California, dpa reported.

Oakland City Council President Larry Reid told broadcast reporters at the scene that police had confirmed six deaths. In addition, several people were injured.

Hours after the shooting, which occurred mid morning, a spokeswoman at Highland Hospital said that five shooting victims were being treated. Police planned to give more details about 0100 GMT Tuesday.

Police spokeswoman Johanna Watson indicated that a suspect had been detained, reportedly a man of Asian origin. There was no indication of a possible motive.

The shooting took place at Oikos College, a private educational institute for Asian medicine, nurse training, music and religious studies. On its website, the college says it practices Christian values.
