Insurgents in southern Afghanistan killed five civilians for allegedly helping the government, officials said Tuesday, dpa reported.

The incident took place in Helmand province's Sangin district on Monday, when Taliban militants became suspicious of the five people.

"After investigation, the terrorists found no sign of helping the government nor any concrete evidence in the homes of the civilians they killed," the Helmand governor's office said.

The insurgents have warned civilians to not collaborate with the government, and have killed alleged informers in the past. Taliban officials were not immediately available for comment.
