India successfully tested its nuclear-capable Agni-II ballistic missile Thursday from a military base in eastern India, a defence official said, DPA reported.
The surface-to-surface missile with a range of 2,000 kilometres was launched off the coast of the eastern state of Orissa as part of a training exercise, the official said.
The two-stage missile can carry a payload of up to 1,000 kilograms and is part of India's strategic nuclear deterrence programme.
Most tests of the Agni-II since 1999 have been successful, but two in November and May 2009 failed.
India, the world's largest democracy, proclaims a no-first-strike policy and says its missile programme is solely for defensive purposes.
