Afghan President Hamid Karzai has postponed a visit to Norway this week, the Norwegian Foreign Minsitry said Wednesday.

According to the Foreign Ministry statement, the Afghan leader cited the need to remain in Afghanistan due to "recent events" in various Arab countries, dpa reported.

These events included the attack Tuesday on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya, where the US ambassador and three other people died. Karzai was on Friday scheduled to have held talks with, among others, Norwegian premier Jens Stoltenberg.

"We look to welcoming President Karzai to Norway at a later date," Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Store said.
