US drone strike kills eight in north-west Pakistan

At least eight people were killed and 15 injured on Thursday when an unmanned US aircraft targeted a compound in Pakistan's restive north-western tribal area, officials said, reported dpa.

The airstrike occurred in the Buland Khel area of Orakzai, one of the seven tribal districts where Taliban rebels have hideouts.

Khushal Khan, the political administrator, confirmed the attack but refused to give the death toll.

But an official from Khan's office told dpa on condition of anonymity that "eight people were killed and 15 injured" when drones fired two missiles into a compound, destroying it completely.

Khan said the compound was owned by a commander of the Hafiz Gul Bahadur group, a militant outfit active in North Waziristan where most of the previous drone strikes have been launched.

It is the first time US drones have targeted a compound in Orakzai.

On Wednesday, five people were killed when a drone targeted a compound in Miranshah, the main town of North Waziristan.
