Obama vows to move US "forward" after re-election

US President Barack Obama vowed Wednesday to move the United States forward and to work for all Americans as he declared victory in a hard-fought re-election campaign against Republican Mitt Romney, dpa reported.

"Tonight, in this election, you, the American people, reminded us that while our road has been hard, while our journey has been long, we have picked ourselves up, we have fought our way back and we know in our hearts that for the United States of America, the best is yet to come," the Democrat told thousands of cheering supporters in his hometown of Chicago.

Obama said he had spoken with Romney and would meet with him in the coming days as he reaches out to Republicans on issues ranging from the nation's deficit to immigration and energy.

"Tonight you voted for action, not politics as usual," the president said. "You elected us to focus on your jobs, not ours."
