At least eight civilians were killed Sunday morning in a roadside bombing in Maiwand district in southern Kandahar province, a provincial security official said, Xinhua reported.

"A minibus was travelling from neighbouring Helmand province to Kandahar early Sunday morning but the ill-fated bus touched off a roadside bomb, killing all eight civilians aboard on the spot," the official said.

He blamed Taliban insurgents for planting the bomb in the province 450 km south of Afghan capital Kabul.

Taliban militants, who have been waging an insurgency of more than one decade, have often attacked Afghan and NATO-led forces with IEDs and roadside bombs but the lethal weapons also inflict casualties on civilians.

The militants group has yet to make comments.
