The Afghan Foreign Minister was to visit Pakistan Friday, an official said, where he was likely to discuss the reconciliation talks between Kabul and the Taliban, dpa reported.

Zalmai Rassoul was to visit on the invitation of Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, said Moazzam Ahmad Khan, spokesman for the Foreign Ministry in Islamabad, in a statement Thursday.

Two weeks ago an Afghan delegation met civilian and military leaders in Pakistan, which released at least nine mid-level Taliban commanders from its jails to create goodwill for the talks in Kabul.

Afghanistan lauded the move as a "an important step towards cooperation in the peace talks."

Analysts have said Rassoul may on Friday ask for the release of Taliban number two Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, arrested in 2010, or other insurgent leaders who remain in Pakistani custody.
