Former US president George HW Bush was released Monday from a Texas hospital after weeks of treatment for bronchitis and other aliments, a family spokesman said, dpa reported.

"I am deeply grateful for the wonderful doctors and nurses at Methodist (hospital) who took such good care of me," the 88-year-old Bush said.

"Let me add just how touched we were by the many get-well messages we received from our friends and fellow Americans. Your prayers and good wishes helped more than you know, and as I head home my only concern is that I will not be able to thank each of you for your kind words."

A doctor noted the former president would continue with physical therapy but would not need any special medication, after his stay that included time in the intensive care unit.

The former president had been in the hospital in Houston, Texas since November 23 with bronchitis, a persistent cough and a bacterial infection.

The senior Bush served as president from 1989 to 1993 and is the father of former president George W Bush, who was president from 2001 to 2009.
