Security at the London Marathon is to be reviewed, British ministers and race organizers said Tuesday, after three people were killed in explosions at the Boston Marathon, dpa reported.

The London Marathon is the world's largest, drawing more than half a million spectators from all over the world and passing by some of the capital's most well known landmarks, including Buckingham Palace and Big Ben.

"We fully expect that Sunday's race, registration and associated events will go ahead as originally scheduled," said the organizers of the London Marathon in an email to participants, adding that they were "deeply saddened and shocked by the news from Boston."

"We are currently reviewing all our security arrangements with the Metropolitan Police," the email said.

Sports Minister Hugh Robertson told BBC radio he was "confident" the event could be kept secure and that it should go ahead.

"I think this is one of those incidents where the best way to show solidarity with Boston is to continue and send a very clear message to those responsible," said Robertson.

"We do have robust security measures in place for Sunday's London Marathon, but given events in Boston it's only prudent for the police and the organisers of Sunday's race to re-examine those security arrangements," said London mayor Boris Johnson.

The attacks in Boston were "shocking, cowardly and horrific," he said, "and the thoughts of all Londoners this morning will be with the victims."

The police said there were no plans as yet to review security arrangements for former premier Margaret Thatcher's funeral, which is to take place on Wednesday.
