The top US tax official resigned Wednesday after revelations that the Internal Revenue Service had improperly scrutinized conservative groups applying for tax-exempt status, President Barack Obama said, dpa reported.

Acting Commissioner of the IRS Steven Miller has given his resignation to Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew, Obama said.

Obama said he had reviewed an internal investigation of the IRS's actions and that "the misconduct it uncovered is inexcusable."

"I will not tolerate this kind of behaviour in any agency, but especially in the IRS given the power it has and the reach it has in all of our lives," Obama said in brief remarks at the White House.
