A Democratic plan to raise the US debt ceiling through 2014 was rejected by the Senate, after failing to garner the 60 votes needed to move forward with the proposal, dpa reported.
The failure in the upper chamber came as Speaker of the House John Boehner told his Republican colleagues that no deal had been reached with the White House to raise the nation's borrowing limit and end the government shutdown.
