A "major" rescue operation is under way in the Mediterranean Sea after a boat carrying migrants capsized, the Maltese Navy has told the BBC as reported.
A spokesman said Italian ships and commercial boats were also involved in the emergency operation in Libyan waters, 130 miles (210km) off the Italian island of Lampedusa.
The Times of Malta newspaper reported that 650 migrants fell overboard from a boat at about midnight local time.
