At least three people were killed after two small planes collided in mid-air on Sunday morning miles (km) from a San Diego airport, the Los Angeles Times newspaper reported.

The crash occurred at around 11 a.m. when a twin-engine Sabreliner collided with a single-engine Cessna 172 over an area located two miles (3 km) northeast of Brown Field in San Diego, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Authority said.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate what led to the crash, the FAA spokesman said.

Further information about the passengers on the plane was not immediately available, the FAA spokesman said.
