Twin explosions have hit the Zaventem airport in Brussels, Belgium.

12:05 (GMT+4) Sky News reports that the blasts centred on an American Airlines desk in a departure hall.

11:53 (GMT+4) The explosion rocked the check-in zone of Brussels Airport, killing "several" people and leaving multiple others wounded, NBC News has reported citing officials.

The blast shook the departures hall shortly after 08:00 local time, according to the report.

"There was an explosion ... there are several dead and wounded but we can't say how many at this point," a federal police spokesman said.

A security source told NBC News the explosion happened near check-in desk four but it was not immediately clear if terrorism was involved.

11:46 (GMT +4) Several people were injured at the departure hall of the Brussels airport, said Sputnik International.

11:30 (GMT +4) Twin explosions have been heard at the Zaventem airport in Brussels, Belgium, reports Sputnik International. The cause of the explosions is so far unknown.
