Switzerland to hold referendum on nuclear phaseout on Sunday

The initiative committee stated during a promotion campaign that an "orderly phaseout" would create more safety and would protect the country, Sputnik International reported.

The Swiss government has already decided to do so but no deadline has been set. A "yes" vote will speed up the closure of three of the country's five reactors that provide a third of its electricity.

The Green Party's initiative will force the shutdown of Beznau I and II in canton Aargau and Muehleberg in Bern as early as in 2017. The Goesgen reactor in Solothurn will follow in 2024. All nuclear energy production will be eventually phased out by 2029, when the Leibstadt reactor in Aargau goes offline
