The US State Department is warning American citizens to avoid the country’s embassy in Turkey amid reports of a shooting in the area, RT reported.

The “ongoing security incident” comes about two hours after the Russian ambassador to Turkey was assassinated in the capital.

The embassy compound, which is approximately 2.5 miles away from the art gallery where Ambassador Andrey Karlov was shot and killed, has been placed on lockdown, the Daily Star reported.

"All US citizens should avoid area near Embassy compound until further notice," the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs tweeted.
