At least six people were killed and seven others injured when their car plunged into a gorge in northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh Monday, police said, Xinhua reports.

The accident occurred at Nehrian in the state's Una district.

"The car carrying 13 people rolled into the gorge after it veered off the road when its driver lost control of the speeding vehicle," a police official said.

While six bodies have been pulled out of the mangled remains of the car, those injured were rushed to local hospital, he added.

"All the victims were returning home to the neighboring state of Punjab from a pilgrimage in Himachal Pradesh in the car which was overloaded," the official said.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, he added.

India has one of the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
