Four people died as a truck crashed into a passenger jeepney in Antipolo City in Rizal province on main Luzon island of the Philippines on Saturday afternoon, police said, Trend reports citing Xinhua.

Police said the accident happened around 3 p.m. along a highway in the city's Mambugan village. The four who were killed were all passengers of the jeepney, police added. Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

Antipolo City, the capital of Rizal province, is about 21 kilometers east of Metro Manila.

The elongated, flatbed passenger jeepneys are the most popular mode of public transport in the Philippines. These iconic vehicles have been plying the Philippine streets for decades.

However, many accidents in the country are blamed on these poorly maintained vehicles that are made up of second-hand car parts.

There is an ongoing government effort to modernize the jeepneys and remove the rickety and old jeepneys from the streets for good.
