Builders protest in Netherlands over gov't anti-pollution measures

Thousands of Dutch constructors demonstrated in The Hague on Wednesday to protest against the government's anti-pollution measures, which, according to them, cause delays of thousands of building projects, reports Trend referring to Xinhuanet.com.

After national farmer protests on Oct. 1 and 16 at the Malieveld park in The Hague, this time the construction sector organized a protest at the same location. While the farmers moved on their tractors to The Hague, the builders came with their trucks from all over the country.

The protest led to huge delays on the roads to The Hague. By 8:30 a.m. local time, the police stated that the Malieveld was full and closed the exit of the main highway to The Hague to stop more vehicles attempting to join the protest. At around 2 p.m., the protest ended without major incidents.

The farmers especially protested against government plans to battle nitrogen pollution by farmers. The builders not only protested against the measures against nitrogen-based pollution, but also against measures to limit pollution by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a group of man-made chemicals, which is common in the ground.

Since Oct. 1, the used ground may not contain more than 0.1 microgram of PFAS per kilo. The pain for the construction sector lies in the fact that soil, sludge or sand therefore can hardly be excavated and transported if it exceeds this standard, leading to delays in construction projects.
