Ukrainian energy system to integrate with European by end of 2007

(ForUm) - During a meeting between Ukrainian Fuel and Energy Minister Yuri Boyko and EU Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs the parties stated the intention to integrate the Ukrainian energy system with the European one by end of 2007, "Cabinet's press office" reported.

As experts estimate it will allow stepping up export twofold in 2008.

According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Fuel and Energy, exports of Ukrainian electric energy in 2005 increased by 56.3 percent, comparing to the 2004, and amounted to 8.358 bn. kWh to the tune of 95 M. USD, reports Trend.

On December 1, 2005 Ukraine and the EU signed a memorandum of understanding and energy cooperation and creating an integral energy system between Ukraine and the Union for the Coordination of Transmission of Electricity (UCTE). On June 2, 2006 the state energy company "UkrEnergo" disseminated a statement, which said that the company was ready to uniting with the European energy system and believed that this project realization would promote integration of the Baltic energy system and the one of the CIS.

According to the "UkrEnergo" company, the national energy system and equipment have been checked to meet norms and requirements of the UCTE.
