(ForUm) - In an Interfax-Ukraine interview, Victor Yushchenko has said the Ukrainian Constitution needs to be reformed and wants to involve society in improving the country's major law, reports Trend.
The President is convinced there are favorable circumstances to formulate plans and create commissions involving those who can act in a balanced way to tackle the issue.
Mr. Yushchenko said Ukraine was on the verge of civil war when the changes were passed two years ago to stabilize the situation. He urged Ukrainians not to underestimate that conflict, which could have demolished the national economy and political stability.
I have no regrets about that, he said. At the same time, we are now beginning to develop a conscious approach to the essence of those innovations.
The President characterized some of them as conspicuously negative and said they do not helpbalance and harmonize the branches of power.
Balances and compromises are being found hard as far the system of powers is concerned, not personal relationships, he said, calling on all the parties to correct all the constitutional wrongspublicly.
If the nation becomes a co-participant of the process, it will not make it worse. Neither will political forces produce a worse interpretation of national goals and national priorities. Thus the language of a referendum is on our agenda, he said, Cabinet press office reported.
