Russia's foreign minister begins two-day visit to Brazil

(mosnews) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov beings his two-day visit to Brazil, one the largest Latin American countries on Thursday. He will meet President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, Foreign Minister Celso Amorim and the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the National Congress (parliament) Aldo Rebeldo.

On Friday, Lavrov will meet the foreign minister of the South American Common Market known as MERCOSUR. A memorandum of understanding on creating a mechanism for a political dialogue between Russia and MERCOSUR' s full and associated members, reports Trend.

Moscow and Brazil are interested in implementing long-term projects in the field of high technologies given Russia's leading positions and Brazil's potential in the sphere of science and technology such as peaceful use of outer space, the Russian Foreign Ministry press and information department reported on the visit's eve.

Economic cooperation is also dynamic. The sides plan to increase the volume of reciprocal trade to 10 billion U.S. dollars by 2010 and move towards a technological alliance, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
