UNO appreciates Ukrainian peacemakers

(ForUm) - In 2006 United Nations Organization forwarded five proposals to Ukraine concerning participation in new peacemaking missions. Acting deputy head of Euro-Atlantic integration department of General Staff of Armed Forces of Ukraine, the colonel Andry Ordynovych told today at briefing.

During 2006 there were four-five offers from UNO, Ordynovych said.

He noted that there was an offer to direct peacemaking mission to Sudan in particular. According to him, UNO is interested in aviation, military police and other subdivisions

The colonel informed that General Staff scrutinizes direction expediency of Ukrainian peacemaker to these countries, reports Trend.

Ordynovych noted that even in case Ukraine agrees, final decision can be made for the benefit of other side that will offer better conditions. There is a great competition, it is peacemaking business, he added.

In his turn, the director of international cooperation of Defense Ministry of Ukraine Ivan Androsenko noted that there are offers also to direct peacemakers to Lebanon and other countries.

At the same time Androsenko said that Ukrainian subdivisions, participating in peacemaking operations, get invaluable experience that can be used in Ukraine.

He also noted that in case of financial support there is a possibility to double Ukrainian contingents in Kosovo.
