( RIA Novosti ) - Britain has completed the elimination of its chemical weapons stock several weeks ahead of the planned date, British Armed Forces Minister Adam Ingram said Tuesday.

Britain has refused to use chemical weapons since the 1950s and in 1996 the country ratified the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on Their Destruction (CWC). The country should have destroyed all of its chemical weapons stocks and components by April 2007.

The work to eliminate the weapons was completed several weeks ahead of schedule and a total of 3,812 units of chemical weapons have been destroyed, with the project costing Britain about 10 million pounds ($19.7 million).
