( RIA Novosti ) - The first round of U.S.-Polish negotiations on the deployment of missile defense elements in Europe will take place in Warsaw on May 23-24, the Polish Defense Ministry said Tuesday.

The report was confirmed by a Polish Foreign Ministry spokesman.

Last week, Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski sanctioned the opening of talks with Washington on the deployment of the missile shield the country.

The U.S. plans to deploy part of its missile defense system in Central Europe, including a radar in the Czech Republic and up to 10 interceptor missiles in Poland.

The governments of both countries appear keen to approve the plans, resisting calls for national referendums on the issue, which came after Russia's warnings that Moscow would "take appropriate steps" to counter what it sees as a threat to its national security.
