( RIA Novosti ) - A fresh outbreak of bird flu has hit five provinces in Vietnam, the southeast Asian country's Agriculture Ministry said.

Poultry, mainly un-vaccinated ducks which died before reaching three months, have been found to be infected with the lethal H5N1 strain in the southern province of Can Tho, as well as Son La, Quang Ninh and Nam Dinh in the north, and in the central province of Nghe an.

Around 2,000 birds have so far died in the five provinces over the past week. Authorities in the country say about 117 million birds have so far been vaccinated.

The H5N1 strain of avian flu, fatal to humans, has killed about 185 people worldwide since 2003. Vietnam was hit by severe outbreaks of bird flu in 2003 and 2004.
